Waste reduction

Weld County recently announced it will start a project to turn organic waste into natural gas and fertilizer.

Cow manure and other agricultural waste from Colorado farms will be used at the facility, in addition to Denver-area restaurant grease and spoiled food usually sent to dumps and sanitation areas.

Designed and built by HDR Constructors Inc., the anaerobic digester facility, will produce natural gas for Heartland Renewable Energy LLC.

The partnership will sell gas produced from the facility to California’s Sacramento Municipal Utility District.
