Wacker’s Charleston plant taking shape

The Wacker Chemical polysilicon production plant near Charleston is on track to be commissioned in mid-2015, a company official told a reporter for the Times Free Press recently.

Wacker is expected to begin hiring for the operation at the end of the year to fill up to 650 jobs. Located on a 500-acre site near Interstate 75, the plant will produce solar panels and related products.

The company is expected to invest up to $2.4 billion to complete the facility. Engineering and concrete work are complete and large equipment has been installed. Final mechanical and electrical installations are slated for the coming months.
